“Trust no girl even if she appears as clear as a ray of light, her hear like a crystal spring with a lovely pure crystal bottom, gentle as she soft, cooling evening air in sultry summer. Trust not. The white snow passes away and leaves after it a black muddy filth”
I came across this line when reading the book “Carl Friedrich Gauss: Titan of Science”. And this portrait was made by Bolyai, Gauss’s “closest distant friend”, who was married and had a son by then. Gauss, then deep in love, replied:”Heaven and Hell! I freeze before the picture which you paint of women. what sombre demon guided your pen when it wrote:(the words above)…Those features are not my Johanna’s” And the man in love potraited Johanna in greater detail: “A wondrously fair madonna countenance, a mirror of spiritual peace and health, kind, somewhat romantic eyes, a perfect figure and size(that is something), a clear understanding and an intelligent conversation(that is also something), but a quiet, happy, modest, and chaste angelic soul which can harm no one, that is the best. Ostentatious display of flirting and inordinate passion are foreign to her. ..” So this is the image of a girl in the eyes of the god of math! Undoubtly Gauss was the lucky one. This girl became his wife and remained an angelic presence to him until her death. And Gauss was the smarter one also. In a lot of cases(but not all!) a girl will behave to one man just in the way the man sees her. In this sense, it’s safe to say that a girl is both demon and god to men, in love.
BTW: this was the description of the author, who could stand for the outsiders: “(Johanna) was not a dazzling beauty and her letters now and then show a lack of proper shooling.” But: “An education in complete contrast to that which Gauss had know had developed in her all the gifts of a happily endowed nature.”
This is a fragment from my reply to a friend seeking abroad study program in China.
So yes, I have a million and one questions about China, it’s beautiful places and beautiful people. Where shall I start? How about one question at a time….
1) Who are you? And what makes YOU uniquely Chinese? (Besides the fact that you were born in China). More specifically, what beliefs were you raised with?
———-Ru, Tao, Chinese history. Although twisted and transformed by the culture revolution, those are still the very origin of the belief of a Chinese.
2) Has your Chinese identity changed at all since you arrived to the US? And if so, how?
Yes. As I said before, by communicating with people from all over the world, I’m changing my own way of life to combine the merit of them all. I’m quite open minded.
3) How do Chinese people perceive Americans in China? (Americans that study abroad, versus Americans who live and work there).
They don’t distinguish American students and American workers. They think Americans are wealthy, fashionate, arrogant, cool, sex-indulging, lazy, frequent practitioners of one night stand and they won’t be surprised if an American commits any crazy deed:) Some think Americans are superior, some think Americans are foolish. All of them think Americans are from Mars or somewhere before they really meet some. And, for most Chinese who have had a fair amount of communication with Americans, they’ll be happy to learn that you are not that different from them and you’re willing to make friends.
4) Have you ever seen Latinos in China? How about South American women?
I couldn’t distinguish a Latinos or a south American women from blond in China. It’s still hard for me now.
We think life should be an opportunity.
But we end up seeing tasks.
Thus the most of us face an binary choice:
Be satisfied and stay with what you’ve got, Or be greedy and venture into the unkowns ahead.
The world is so great that we live on seeing new pages of it.
But it’s so cruel that you may die for peacefulness before you reach the excitement of discovery. And we can’t control what we’ll see.
What choice will you make?
Still we’re greedy for the new world.
It may well lead to death of all, but it’s the only thing that keeps our conscious of life.
… The world is a bitch. And man dig it.

Discussion about the “melting pot” of American culture in unplug party.
Jeff turns the race discrimination discussion into seat picking on airplanes, and Victoria turns seat picking into lover-finding.
A freshman she is, Sasha is the most open minded and successful Korean I’ve ever seen in terms of multi-culture communication. And she speaks English so well. Hard to believe she came here at the same time as me. It’s definitely great to have a roommate like Sara.
Been to CS career fair.
Need to look for wireless companies myself. None came here.
Checked my bank account. Found that I am earning just enough to pay for tuition, housing and living.
Helped Kelvin to carry a bed for selling. He is a enterprise person. I think I can learn a lot from him.
