How to do survey?

Filed under: Uncategorized

information from https://course.ie.cuhk.edu.hk/~ieg5120/project.htm and some of my own ideas:

Survey criteria
{
    Top journal/conference paper
    {
        Mobicom/hoc
        ICNP
        Infocom
        anything else?
    }
    Industry
    {
        support/application for standard
        product
    }
}

Goals and questions:
{
(a) clearly define the research idea/problem
(b) give an overview of the key papers on that topic and their findings
(c) critique existing work,
(d) list open problems and challenges ahead.
(e) analysis application potential
(f) list active figures, research groups, commnities, companies in this domin and their relation.
(g) If the area is worth doing, come up with a plan to follow the lastest progress.
(h) List collegues in this area that collaborate with.

What are the applications?
What are the main results?
Are the main results applicable to only very specific applications or more generally applicable?

What are the fundumantal problems in this area? Do you think they are important?
What are the theorotical problems in this area? What are their implifications, say, can they be used to attack a broader range of problems?
What are the system problems in this area? Are those technologies up-to-date or do they have a bright future?
Are there any more important problems behind the problems we are attacking in this area?
Status of current reseach. Is it at the point of breaking through or in the blind trials?
}

We may need some tools for basic information gathering and filtering. We have Google and online citation databases. But is there some information assistant software for this?
Maybe we can write one, if necessary:)

Where to find information?
{
    Text:
    {
        somebody else’s survey papers?
        paper, talk, spec, book
    }
    Industry
    {
        website of companies;
        business website;
        industry website;
        stock website?
    }
}

A little depressed. The work is done too slowly, maybe.

Played basketball with Xiaoting. Swimming. But…

I left the cougarOne card in the recreation center!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I began to doubt if I carried it in my pocket and jumped into the water…

SW project working log, SW mid-term preparation…

Investigating survey topics. Reviewing materials from Jerry. Le.

A lot of my classmates are doing survey work all over the world. We can do that together!

“Oh. That’s all right.”

Zack and Naomi had their baby girl. I went to the hospital with Sara and an Indian girl. Under Sara’s guidiance, I bought some flowers. This is the first time I gave flowers to a girl… And the first time to see a new born baby, too.

Zack should be a good father. When am I going to have a baby? It seems so far away from me that it’s unthinkable…

Rong has a meeting tommorrow about my line of work.

Late into the night, I realized that I’ve missed to pursue what a real programmer is for a long time. Also, what a problem solver is?

still reading the paper. prepared the ppt an hour before the presentation. went to Sara’s birthday party. a great night. It must be a great experience to have people for Russia, Germany, Morocco, Turkey, Italy, Argentina , China, Korean and the U.S. to sing the birthday song for you using their own language.

And I’ve got an amazing discovery: there is the game similar to the “killer” one in China in many other countries. In U.S. it’s called Mafia, and there is other versions of it in Germany and Russia. Maybe I should further investigate if the Africans play this game.

The meeting of software engineering group this morning was canceled for “it was raining”. I really don’t quite understand.

However, there were still 4 of us who came: Brandon, Pranitha, Padmaja and me. Finally we decided to use C#, Visual Studio, and agreed on Srikant’s idea. Also we think it OK to meet from 5p.m. to 6p.m. every Monday and Wednesday, which is, before the software engineering class.

Assignments…

I went to the stadium to watch an American football game. Also I saw cheer leaders for the first time. I like this game.

talked with Dr. Rong about what should I do in this year.

She proposed that I do some follow up work this semester, and select a top to do some survey. Then I can choose a direction and start to prepare for that from next semester.

I agreed with her. And since I found myself lacking in the theory background I proposed that I’ll try to start the survey from both ways of application and theories this semester. I hope I could do that and I believe that’s helpful.

The other idea of mine is to combine academy study with industry experience. But Rong doesn’t quite agree with me on this, at least in my first years in the PHD program. She doesn’t intern at next summer a good idea. Well, maybe she’s right. But that’s one year after. We can decide that later. I’ll focus on learning to do research in this semester, and the following one as well.
